Elite College Essay Consultant
Elite College Essay Consultant After reading a great essay, I feel as if I have just had an enlivening conversation with the person even though it was entirely on paper. Many of the colleges and universities that accept the Coalition application require you to submit at least one essay as part of your application. You can start working on these essays at any time and save drafts in your MyCoalition Locker. , any other graphic organizer, and/or pre-writing technique that works for you will help you to focus your ideas. You may want to try outlining your essay in multiple formats or the same format multiple times. You may do pre-writing for several different answers to a topic and then pick the best one to write the actual essay. You might want to plan to do one pre-writing essay, wait a few days, and then do another pre-writing exercise. As mentioned in step 2, writing a college essay takes time, but with enough pre-planning the actual essay writing will be easier. Remember, your disability is part of who you are but not all of who you are. In other words, your college essay should give the reader a real sense of your unique personality, characteristics, and qualities. Applicants should realize that most admissions counselors are young and have a sense of what a teenage voice sounds like, Jager-Hyman says. Choose a topic that recounts âthat moment whenââ¦The most impactful and memorable college essays focus on an ordinary topic that resulted in deep self-reflection and increased self-insight. In your own voice, tell a story that reveals a defining moment that helped to shape who you are today and influences who youâll be tomorrow. Do not fall into the trap of describing your disability in great detail. Do not write a textbook explanation of your disability. Disclosing your disability may be important, but explaining every aspect of it and how it affects your life might be more than what the college admissions expect from you. You could describe a situation from your unique point of view , mention it in passing, or tell a specific story about a situation in which your disability affected the outcome. It is well-written with college bound vocabulary and style, but easy to read and somewhat unassuming. Like great works of fiction, these essays clearly paint a picture in the readerâs mind. The main character is developed with depth and detail. Great essays are memorable because they distinctively portray their subjects without relying on clichés or formulaic topics. They convey on paper a sense of who the writer is as a person. If a college suspects an essay is not the studentâs work, they donât automatically throw him out of the applicant pool, says Krahnke, but a negative vibe is placed in the counselorâs head. Heathman believes the job of the essay coach is to help students themselves find the right way to tell their story. But there is a big difference between a professionally written essay and an essay conceived, written and revised by a student, under the direction of a professional coach. Your goal in a college application is to stand out. Use your uniqueness to your advantage, not as a hindrance. What questions do you have about writing college admissions essays? If youâre already in college, do you have any advice for current high schoolers? I love what I do and am immeasurably proud of every applicant I work with and their results. It can be hard to choose what to talk about in your college essays. In addition to this, the schools that youâre applying to may have different prompts â" which could mean having to write multiple essays. This is why we recommend sitting down and coming up with a few different topics to consider. No wonder people feel stressed out about their college essays! The B+ Grades A+ College Application author says, however, that some essays are afforded 20 minutes, and others just a perfunctory glance. Margery Kashman, aka The College Essay Whiz, was the obvious and easy choice to help me with the daunting task of filling out college applications and writing college essays. To the college essay admissions process I bring skills honed as a television writer, a screenwriter, and a journalist. Entering my ninth year, I have worked with nearly 400 bright, motivated, and exceptional applicants who each year are accepted to T10 colleges and universities.
Application Essay
Application Essay Yet, it is still short enough that it does not need footnotes and cited resources, usually. 500-word essays do not have to be exactly 500 words, but they should be as close as possible. The essay prompt may say âin under 500 wordsâ or âin at least 500 words,â which would state whether 500 is the minimum or maximum word count. If that information is not specified, write as much as you need to comprehensively address the prompt without frivolous content. My teacher mentioned an interesting one about basketball, and the entire essay was a metaphor for the writers view on life. The process by which doctors are socialized into how to be a doctor comes largely through the mentoring process of medical school. Vocational training within the applied sciences tends to be much more about apprenticeship than about theoretical knowledge. When Carol Hathaway, a long time ER nurse, decides to go back to med school and become a doctor, the MDs in the ER treat her very differently. Dr. Kerry Weaver asks her to perform procedures as if she were already a med student. Research on education shows that the strongest predictor of a studentâs success is how detailed and specific their picture is of the future. This is the most important work we do, as individuals and communities. Explain your commitments, and you will be the kind of student colleges find immensely attractive. What difference do you want to make in the world? Dr. Weaver snaps at Carol, telling her that if she is going to go to medical school, she has to stop thinking like a nurse. The implication in Dr. Weaver 's criticism is clear. Nurses worry about the feelings of people, while doctors worry about seeing the next patient or about developing enough distance emotionally so that they can move quickly from one medical crisis to another. Nurses, a profession dominated by women, are the ones who are supposed to soothe over any hurts caused by a too abrupt or too uncaring doctor. My own experiences with hospitals as well as the experiences of friends of mine seem unanimous on this. Nurses were great, and if you were lucky you got a doctor with a decent bedside manner. But for the most part, the professionals who really looked after loved ones were nurses. Part of this is likely the result of the different roles nurses and doctors play within the hierarchy of the hospital. When Carol Hathway announces to the staff of the Cook County ER that she wants to be a doctor, the doctors on staff begin treating her differently. The extra length gives room for extra creativity, but it also requires more time to put the perfect piece together. 500-word scholarship essays offer more writing flexibility than 250-word essays. With a shorter word count, you are often forced to summarize long-winded thoughts into quick to-the-point snippets. 500 words give you more room to express your opinion. You may have to adjust how you convey those thoughts based on the length. Your essay should always have a beginning, middle, and end. Another scholarship essay length you may encounter is 1,000 words. With a 1,000-word scholarship essay, you will need to cite sources and provide detailed references to support your claims. 1,000+ word essay prompts are often used for writing competitions, where you may be asked to create a fictional story. However, students are more concerned when they can 't get their paragraphs to be even a third of a page long. They usually think this is because they simply have nothing more to say, which in argumentative writing is not usually the case. Usually the inability to get paragraphs to be long enough is the result of writing paragraphs that are missing key components. Weâre giving away a $1,000 scholarship to affected college students. All you need to do is submit a proof of your enrollment. You should approach all essays with the same mentality, regardless of their length. Your goal is to compose a piece that clearly guides the reader through your thoughts and reasoning. Instead of just having her do the kind of grunt work nurses usually get stuck with, they have her do some of the procedures that the med students usually do. Carol looks uncomfortable with this, but she does well. While Carol is uncomfortable with this, she does perform well. Her skill at those procedures seems to make the point that nurses who excel at their profession are as skilled as doctors in some ways. However, later in the episode, when a mother 's young child dies, Carol insists on giving the parent time with the child to grieve, rather than moving her out of the room to make way for incoming patients.

Teen Wrote His College Admission Essay On Burrito Bowls Everyone has strengths, qualities that somewhere someone probably will fall in love withâ" and your goal is to help the admissions team love you. Or at least see you through the lens that someone who adores you would. By the time I finish your essay, I should get to know you. Similarly, if I handed your essay to a parent or a friend, they would instantly recognize this personality on the page as yours. Your essay should show the unique person you are. Surprisingly, some applicants never care to ask this question, and they write essays that donât enhance their applications. Yes, the essay is an important part of your application. But remember it is still a part of your application. I attribute a lot of my successes to how my application as a whole, not just the essays, constructs a story about who I am and what Iâve done. This essay is an example of how to tell the story of moving to America in a unique way. That said, you should absolutely get someone to edit for typos and grammar. Donât just farm it out â" learn from those writing lessons and use the essay to become more confident in your own voice. When my best friend John Smith â20 told me about U.Chicagoâs diverse campus environment , I was excited, but skeptical â" diversity can mean different things to different people. So I went to see for myself, visiting on September 9th, 2017. The info session was intimate â" more so than any other I have attended â" with a relatively select group of students offered full campus access. Bob Davis â12, my tour leader, was extraordinarily patient, walking me through U.Chicagoâs outstanding array of clubs and societies, including the MSAC Committee. U.Chicago is one of the only schools I am considering that even offers a student-led Diversity Committee, much less one that advises faculty and university management on key outreach issues.Outstanding. In order to write a great college essay, you don't need a committee. Besides, trying to get all the members on the same page is a lot like herding cats. Donât worry about being someone elseâs idea of a âgood writer.â If youâre not funny, itâs not the time to be funny. If youâre not a good writer and donât have a huge vocabulary, donât use fancy words. Your ideas can be profound and can show deep insight into your character, even if they are told in simple, unadorned phrases. Maybe not, but I loved the rules, the structure, and the big questions that surrounded organizing a government. I thought about these things constantlyâ"while brushing my teeth, doing chores, and driving to school. Unable to take this beloved course a second time, I chose my senior classes with more than a touch of melancholy. This student focused on a single question â" where is home? â" and showed the reader a lot about who he is as a person. The essay is a joy to read, sharing a detailed glimpse of the studentâs personality without feeling like itâs trying to list positive personal qualities. David Nathan is a high school English teacher and Nick Accrocco is a college counselor who have collaborated on a book about college admissions. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. Iâd become so accustomed to reading the function-focused writings of Locke, Rousseau, Madison, Thoreau, that I found it difficult to see âliteratureâ as anything more than mere stories. I wanted substance that I could actually do something with, and I didnât expect to find it in AP Lit. Do not allow your essays to descend into an impenetrable bulk of buzzwords and banality. This is best described in How to Write a Great Statement of Purpose, by Vince Gotera of the University of Northern Iowa, which was my guide to writing my essays when I applied to graduate school. At top colleges, a âwow essayâ may compensate for several Bâs or a test score a sliver below the 25th percentile, but donât expect admission if your stats arenât close. This video explains what not to include in your college admissions essay. Be sure to address the question, especially if it is a two-part question â" admission essays are just as much about showing who you are as they are about proving your writing skills. In addition to making sure that all of these things are included, you should also be aware of HOW you write your essay. Admissions committees want essays to be concise â" you want to make your point in about 700 words or less. You should also make sure that your essay is coherent â" that your ideas flow and your arguments make sense. Donât be afraid to show off your writing skills, but donât do anything that takes away from your core message. This video explains the importance of your college admissions essay. You can fix the writing and your thoughts will still be there. The other thing I caution about is the service trip. If you want to write about how you saved the word, you shouldnât do it.

Nervous About College Essay Writing?
Nervous About College Essay Writing? If you are copying over a 700-word essay from a different school into an application with 650-word maximum, you'll lose the final 50 words. Remember, don't just lop off the bottom section -- take time to craft a complete essay. Sometimes students neglect to copy over their entire essay into an application and only submit a portion of their work. Many local students want to write about growing up in a diverse environment and how they have been enriched by that environment. While celebrating diversity is great, the problem is that these essays risk falling into truisms. Students write about the diversity of their schools or their city, but not enough about who they are. Essays on negative life events can be very tricky. Unless enough time has passed since the experience, the essay can be too personal, too much of a rant, or just too hard to read. The essay is an important aspect of the application for Common App and Coalition applicants, especially high school students applying for college. For students who already have some college courses completed, GPA is more important. Always re-read your college application essay every time you submit it. You should also make sure your essay fits within the word count constraints. For instance, Purdue's maximum essay length is 650 words for both the common application and transfer student application. It is a great idea to have someone else read your essay to provide feedback. In fact, the more people who read your essay, the better. Ask your readers whether the essay provides an accurate depiction of who you are and ask whether it is clear, concise, and easy to read. If you were given a prompt by a certain school, make sure that your essay actually addresses the prompt. Even if you donât have anyone else who can read your essay, you can review it yourself â" just take a day or two off after writing it before you read it back so you can view it with fresh eyes. To put it another way, in a world where everything else is equal between the applicants, a good essay can make a difference. There are, however, different ways to write college essays that can increase your chance for an admission offer and things you can do that may hurt your chances. Transcripts, letters of recommendation, standardized tests â" itâs the time of year when high school seniors are checking items off their college admissions to-do lists. While no lives are riding on your college application essays, this is a great time to revisit some of the rules of writing well. Experts say supplemental essays tend to be short, but St. Johnâs College bucks that trend, requiring a minimum of 400 words. Thatâs because the school is interested in seeing students write at length on a chosen topic. No college application is complete without the personal essay, which can be daunting for many students to write. In 2017, Carolina Williams earned admission to Yale thanks in part to an application essay about her love of Papa John's pizza. Williams' essay brought widespread recognition from news outlets and social media, and demonstrated how admissions essays can help students add a personal touch to an otherwise faceless process. The piece highlighted her distinct literary style and fun personality, and it's a model that other applicants should emulate. You can control the progress of writing all the time. In addition, you may ask a writer for a free preview in order to learn more about his or her writing style and performance. When Warren was asked about haphazard mistakes students make, he recounted one college essay example. A student's narrative can help admissions officers understand how their storyline intersects with the institution's purpose. While many students stress over their essays, it's important to remember that this is just one component of the admissions process, and rarely the decisive factor. That doesn't mean that the essay is unimportant; it does give you an opportunity to directly make your case to the admissions committee. Just keep a healthy perspective on its relative importance as you write. One rep said the general rule of thumb was no essays on the Four Dsâ"Drugs, dating, death, and divorceâ"but you get the idea. If you want to write about a personal challenge, emphasize what you learned and how you grewâ"if you dwell on the details, the essay will not achieve its purpose. The best way to move forward is to see a college essay as a conversation. If they could, colleges would welcome you to campus and ask you questions for hoursâ"but if they did that, no one would be admitted to college until they were 43. To accelerate the process, they want you to talk on paper; let them get to know you by giving them a guided tour of your heart, your brain, and your life. If you succeed, they will look up from reading your essay, and be surprised you arenât in the room; indeed, they will swear the chair next to them is warm from your having sat in it since Tuesday. Once you have written your college application essay, your job isnât done â" you need to keep working on it to improve it until you can improve it no further.
What Makes A Great College Essay?
What Makes A Great College Essay? But remember it is still a part of your application. In brainstorming about what topic to write about for your Common Application essay, look at what you intend to present in the rest of your application and think about overarching traits that can represent you. I attribute a lot of my successes to how my application as a whole, not just the essays, constructs a story about who I am and what Iâve done. Do not allow your essays to descend into an impenetrable bulk of buzzwords and banality. This is best described in How to Write a Great Statement of Purpose, by Vince Gotera of the University of Northern Iowa, which was my guide to writing my essays when I applied to graduate school. As a high school and MEK English teacher, Ashley brings ready classroom management skills and a strong rapport with students to MEK. However, she is also well-versed in MEK strategy for teaching College Test Prep, H.S. Test Prep, and College Application Essays. Tragedies, ultimately, can be very positive, transformative topics to write about as they often show us who we are under intense pressure. Do not shy away from writing about the bad in life as it is a relatable experience that all people will go through at one point or another. Furthermore, this type of essay invites comparison. I was skeptical that even the most appealing humanities class, AP Literature, would be anything but anticlimactic by comparison. How to Write the Best College Admissions EssayThe college admissions essay is perhaps the most dreaded part of the college application process. All high school and college students, as well as anyone looking to attend college or graduate school in the next year. Simply log in or create a free account below to apply. Yes, the essay is an important part of your application. We learn a great deal about you from each essay you write, and we hope that you enjoy this unique opportunity to reflect and introduce yourself in your application. Your essays must be well-written, and it is always good to have someone that you trust proofread them (carelessness is easily preventable!). If you procrastinate on writing your essays and wait until the last minute, you may miss out on a valuable opportunity to have them read by a fresh pair of eyes. It is also abundantly clear when you have rushed through your essays just to check a box. This does not mean that you can only write an interesting essay if you have had an experience that no one else has ever had. College admissions officers comb through hundreds of essays a year, so you have just a few minutes to catch their attention. Open with an anecdote (If itâs funny, even better.) that will hook them in the beginning and keep them reading until the end. Or go for their heart â" trying to move an admission officer with emotion isnât a bad idea, either. Writing the college essay is the most stressful â" and arguably, the most important â" part of the application process. That said, you should absolutely get someone to edit for typos and grammar. Donât just farm it out â" learn from those writing lessons and use the essay to become more confident in your own voice. You can fix the writing and your thoughts will still be there. The other thing I caution about is the service trip. If you want to write about how you saved the word, you shouldnât do it. Some colleges require a supplemental essay in addition to the personal essay. Typically, admissions pros note, these essays are shorter and focus on answering a specific question posed by the college. The three supplemental essays that you submit for your application may be short, but they are in no way less important as a result of their brevity.

College Essay Help
College Essay Help Although my parents were not fluent in English, I was able to learn English with the help of Dora the Explorer, Barney, and my surroundings. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. I have nothing to lose when I listen to my peers. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I canât do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people. I donât feel Iâve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically theyâre the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I donât know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. Clearly, this method wasnât going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I donât necessarily have to find validity in everyoneâs viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. âThese people are just confused,â Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, âLet people be who they are.â Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another personâs outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences.

Write A Great College Essay! Tips From An Admissions Counselor
Write A Great College Essay! Tips From An Admissions Counselor Put the reader in medias res, that is, in the middle of things. Place the reader in the middle of something happening or in the middle of a conversation. You also want to have an opinion, not step back like an unthinking geek. Write your essay as though you would be a great second date. That means you should write with voice, that is, you need to write with your own personality. Honesty, humor, talking the way you talk, showing the way you think, all help to create voice. Sometimes even a single word that stands as a paragraph can make the reader wonder and read on. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings. Cautiously, it inches closer to the barrier, farther from the unbelievable perfection of the farm, and discovers a wide sea of black gravel. Because we faced similar issues, we were able to support one and other, share tactics, and give advice. One of my friends, John, gave me advice on how to help my mother emotionally by showing her love, something I hadnât been able to do before. My friends gave me a family and a home, when my own family was overwhelmed and my home was gone. After 14 years of living in a region destroyed by violence, I was sent away to boarding school in a region known for peace, Switzerland. Stained with gray stones and marked with yellow lines, it separates the chicken from the opposite field. Now my friends in Switzerland come to me asking me for advice and help, and I feel as if I am a vital member of our community. My close friend Akshay recently started stressing about whether his parents were going to get divorced. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. On a desk in the left corner, a framed picture of an Asian family is beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we donât want to deal with. In a world where we know very little about the nature of âTruth,â itâs very easyâ"and temptingâ"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. With Johnâs advice, I started checking in on Akshay, spending more time with him, and coaching him before and after he talked to his parents. I started playing basketball, began working on a CubeSAT, learned to program, changed my diet, and lost all the weight I had gained. I started to make new friends with more people at my school and was surprised to find out that 90% of their parents were divorced. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chickenâs unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side.

Expert Advice to Help Your Teen Make (and Keep!) New Yearââ¬â¢s Resolutions
1New Yearââ¬â¢s resolutions. Theyââ¬â¢re ambitious, yet intimidating; full of hope, yet all too easily forgotten. And for teens, theyââ¬â¢re just plain overwhelming. ââ¬Å"While balanced perspective can be challenging for adults, it is often daunting for teenagers. Impulsivity reigns supreme during adolescence ââ¬â often limiting our aspirations,â⬠says psychotherapist and Mental Gym founder, Bill Benson, who advises parents on how to approach the subject of New Yearââ¬â¢s resolutions with teens. So how can parents help their teens make lasting New Yearââ¬â¢s resolutions? We asked mothers, fathers, family therapists, and parenting experts to contribute their top tips. Their answers may surprise you 1. Set feasible goals. Instead of brainstorming grandiose life makeovers with your teen, focus on smaller, more actionable items. Varda Meyers Epstein, Kars4Kids writer and mother-of-12, suggests choosing ten little things and concentrating on those, like laying out school clothes the night before or dedicating ten minutes in the morning to a nutritious breakfast. ââ¬Å"Any goal that is ââ¬Ëcan-doââ¬â¢ is appropriate for a teen,â⬠Meyers Epstein says, ââ¬Å"They already know they can succeed with them, and it gets them moving forward in a proactive, positive way.â⬠2. Practice ââ¬Å"accepting,â⬠not ââ¬Å"expecting.â⬠ââ¬Å"Support your kidââ¬â¢s aspirations by ââ¬Ëacceptingââ¬â¢ rather than ââ¬Ëexpecting,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ says Benson, ââ¬Å"Kindly step outside of your own boxed perspective when listening to your childââ¬â¢s hopes, dreams, desires, and goals ââ¬â you just may learn something by considering the fresh perspective of a developing mind.â⬠As a way to advance this suggestion into practice, try actively listening to your teenââ¬â¢s New Yearââ¬â¢s resolutions, then repackage and repeat them back to your teen, before tweaking them with your own suggestions. Doing so will make your teen feel heard and will create a safe space to further conversation. 3. Donââ¬â¢t call them ââ¬Å"resolutions.â⬠ââ¬Å"We dont make New Years resolutions,â⬠states Homeschool Base editor, Sarah Tippett, ââ¬Å"we set goals and plan! Of course theyââ¬â¢re still New Years resolution[s], but we approach things very differently.â⬠So whatââ¬â¢s Tippettââ¬â¢s key to helping her teens make and keep these aspirations? ââ¬Å"Make the goals very specific and formulate a plan or a checklist of items that need to be done to achieve these goals.â⬠4. Set goals as a family. Renaming New Yearââ¬â¢s resolutions isnââ¬â¢t the only way Tippett helps her teens achieve their New Yearââ¬â¢s goals. ââ¬Å"We also set goals as a family,â⬠Tippett states, claiming accountability as the driving force, ââ¬Å"The best way to achieve a goal is to tell everyone you know.â⬠Following Tippettââ¬â¢s advice, try encouraging your teen to keep their sibling updated on their goal to read more. As a parent, follow up with your teen by asking questions or provoking discussion around their resolution throughout the year. Set goals as a family (like going on more walks or making sure thereââ¬â¢s always something green on the dinner table), and make it a fun challenge to accomplish them together! 5. Make it personal. ââ¬Å"When your goal involves people who are external factors you canââ¬â¢t control, it will not end well,â⬠Tippett warns. Just as there are many good ways to help your teen make New Yearââ¬â¢s Resolutions, there are also many avenues to avoid as well. Tippettââ¬â¢s own child attempted to set a New Yearââ¬â¢s resolution that involved improving the relationship between himself and a co-worker. ââ¬Å"You cant expect anyone else to go along with your resolution,â⬠Tippett cautions, ââ¬Å"Although my teen tried to do a great job, the co-worker was unresponsive.â⬠6. Write it down. ââ¬Å"I like to tell my kids to write down 10 things they can do to improve their lives in even a very small way and to work through that list,â⬠says Meyers Epstein. Other parents agree: ââ¬Å"Write it down on a piece of paper or tell your teen to put it in their phone,â⬠says parenting expert, Cherie Corso, ââ¬Å"Every day, your teen will look at that resolution. By seeing it, he or she will remember to take actions towards that goal.â⬠So now that you know how to make New Yearââ¬â¢s resolutions, what types of goals should you help your teens set? As test prep experts, it would be downright irresponsible of us not to advocate for resolutions that can help your teen achieve their future college goals. While youââ¬â¢re planning 2017 resolutions with your teen, include feasible goals to help them improve their ACT scores; like following a personalized ACT study plan or committing to raising their score by 10 points with these easy tips. In addition, our experts came up with a few additional suggestions (in addition to the ones above) that implement their advice, including: making a point to eat healthier at dinner developing a conflict management system to avoid exhaustive feuds with siblings flossing daily Do you have any New Yearââ¬â¢s Resolutions success stories of your own?
